When I see the water in the near distance and the hills behind, my back against the house wall, I feel both a sense of remove and a sense of place. I am rooted in the chair on the balcony in the same moment that I am pulled towards the grandeur of space – a space I cannot touch but can smell and hear only in the most faint and inarticulate way much as I might experience a cloud.

Here it is Iris! This painting is by Impressionist painter Berthe Morrisot, "La Hotte" 1885. I believe there are some artworks that give the viewer a much stronger atmospheric sense of being in an environment or place rather than as a depiction of an agglomeration of objects - illuminating rather than illustrating the world of experience.
